There are countless ways to brilliantly style a Clifton + Leopold twilly or kerchief. To start - what’s the difference between a twilly and a kerchief?


The twilly was originally created by our friends Hermès in the 1930s. The name was adopted from the word “Twill”, which is a weaving technique utilized for soft and draping fabrics. The scarf was originally pioneered as a way to protect purse handles, but we say, why limit it to that?


You can think of a kerchief like your favorite classic bandana - but we’ve made wearing ours a step easier and more stylish, with our triangular shape.

Knotted in your hair with tails

Start this look by laying your twilly flat against the crown of your head. Gather your tails together at the base of your neck, under your hair, and double-knot. Then fan those tails out against your back or over your shoulder - a key part of this classic look!

Draped around your neck

This one couldn’t be easier - and may we suggest it as a way to accessorize when you’re already late to an event? Simply grab your favorite twilly and loosely drape it around your neck and over your shoulders.

Tied around your bun

Wrap your twilly around a bun that’s been fastened with an elastic band. Continue to wrap until just the tails remain. Orient the tails to hang off the bottom of your bun, fanning to lay flat against your head. *We also love this look tying a kerchief around a top knot bun, allowing the kerchief points to sit atop our head!

Start with laying your twilly flat against the crown of your head. Gather your tails at the base of your neck and cross them over each other, meeting back around at the crown of your head. Knot your twilly here, at the top of your head, or off to the side, depending on your preference. Either one is guaranteed to grab attention for all the right reasons.

A modern, casual take on your classic ascot, aka, the “Thurston Howell III” (Millennials - Google this!) Simply hold your kerchief up by the tails (wider part of the triangle on top), then knot the “top” of the kerchief behind your neck, allowing the triangle to lay against your neck. Tuck into a button-up shirt, allowing the top to peek out.
