Twillys + Kerchiefs
There are countless ways to brilliantly style a Clifton + Leopold twilly or kerchief. To start - what’s the difference between a twilly and a kerchief?
The twilly was originally created by our friends Hermès in the 1930s. The name was adopted from the word “Twill”, which is a weaving technique utilized for soft and draping fabrics. The scarf was originally pioneered as a way to protect purse handles, but we say, why limit it to that?
You can think of a kerchief like your favorite classic bandana - but we’ve made wearing ours a step easier and more stylish, with our triangular shape.
TwillyKnotted in your hair with tailsStart this look by laying your twilly flat against the crown of your head. Gather your tails together at the base of your neck, under your hair, and double-knot. Then fan those tails out against your back or over your shoulder - a key part of this classic look!

TwillyDraped around your neckThis one couldn’t be easier - and may we suggest it as a way to accessorize when you’re already late to an event? Simply grab your favorite twilly and loosely drape it around your neck and over your shoulders.

TwillyTied around your bunMake an impression when you arrive, and leave a lasting impression as you walk away. Wrap your twilly around a bun that’s been fastened with an elastic band. Continue to wrap until just the tails remain (the length of this is to your preference.) Orient the tails to hang off the bottom of your bun, fanning to lay flat against your head. *We also love this look tying a kerchief around a top knot bun, allowing the kerchief points to sit atop our head!

TwillyDouble wrapped & knotted around your headHere’s one of our favorite magic tricks - turning your twilly into a kerchief style headband. Start with laying your twilly flat against the crown of your head. Gather your tails at the base of your neck and cross them over each other, meeting back around at the crown of your head. Knot your twilly here, at the top of your head, or off to the side, depending on your preference. Either one is guaranteed to grab attention for all the right reasons.

TwillyTied around your neckFold your twilly in half and wrap it around the back of your neck. Slide the tails through the fold (slipknot style) and fan out to the side. Add your favorite vintage brooch as a sparkling finishing touch!

KerchiefTied on your bagAn easy way to add pizazz and personality to any purse or tote. Simply knot your kerchief around the straps of your bag, allowing the points to hang down. *Try this with a twilly for a more dramatic look, and a historic nod to the originators at Hermès.

KerchiefTied around your neck, ascot styleA modern, casual take on your classic ascot, aka, the “Thurston Howell III” (Millennials - Google this!) Simply hold your kerchief up by the tails (wider part of the triangle on top), then knot the “top” of the kerchief behind your neck, allowing the triangle to lay against your neck. Tuck into a button-up shirt, allowing the top to peek out.

KerchiefKnotted up in your hairThis is a team favorite, because not only is it an adorable way to accessorize a look, it is a very effective way to wrangle back hair while running errands, doing things around the house, spending time outdoors, etc. Simply lay your kerchief flat, and fold it up, starting at the wider end. Take your rolled kerchief and line it up at the base of your neck, allowing the points to meet up at the crown of your head, and knot at the top of your head, or off to the side (up to your preference.) Now go get sh*t done!
