#HowTheyDoDapper: Jess Torres aka The Girl In A Bow Tie

by Priya Pappu |

Jess wears the Warhol bow

When we saw Jess @thegirlinabowtie on Instagram, our first thought was - we need to get this girl a bow tie, immediately! Ah, the joys of social media. Everybody, meet Jess! Jess is a dapper lady "living slow in a fast city." She has a very enviable bow tie collection, and is absolutely the kind of person we would love to sit and have a cocktail with. If we didn't already love her enough, though "off brand" (her words!) she's a big Britney Spears fan (if there's one single thing you should know about Team C+L - it's that we stan Britney. Like, made a pilgrimage to her childhood home in Kentwood, Louisiana, STAN.)

We know there's been a lot of "Warhol" in our feed lately, but it's because it's genuinely one of our favorite C+L pieces so far - and it seems we're not the only ones!

Read on to get to know the girl behind the bow tie a bit better.

----------------------------------------------------------------
Name:  Jess Torres, She/Her/They/Them
Find them looking dapper in:   The isle of Manhattan—more specifically, Alphabet City.
Tell us a little bit about the story you're writing in your Clifton + Leopold?
I’m writing a slow story of romance, reinvention, curiosity, bravery, wonder, and a little bit of magic—spreading the messages of inclusivity, authenticity, and kindness everywhere I go, hoping that I can inspire everyone to #BeADamnRipple
Complete this sentence. I love the C + L ____________ because _____________ .
I love the C + L Warhol bow tie because it somehow both evokes a certain period of time and is timeless, all at once. It brings about that lovely feeling of nostalgia for a place and a time I’ve never lived yet finding myself longing for.
What is atop your C + L wishlist?
The Merlot pocket square. The richness of the colors feels so moody and sexy. Pretty much wanna be wrapped in this fabric for the rest of winter, and if ya made it in a tie or a neckerchief I’d probably scoop one of those up too, so I could do just that. (That's two for Merlot! And, noted! We'll get right on that.)
It's a Saturday! What are you doing?
I begin the day as I do every other day of the week—coffee, jazz, and journaling. Followed up by a run along the East River, brunch in the East Village, meandering walks around the city—and in the evening, I’ll open a bottle of wine, throw on some vinyl, dance, cook, and cozy up by the “fire” (aka Netflix fireplace).
Your Ultimate Dapper Icon:
Marlene Dietrich circa 1930 in ‘Morocco.’ Her donning of a men’s tuxedo on the big-screen at a time when women wearing menswear was far from acceptable behavior has always been inspiring—not to mention she rocked a suit better than any gentleman at the time, if you ask me.
It's quitting time on any given day. What are you sipping on?
A smooth bourbon or a slightly dirty gin martini—stirred, not shaken. Just call me the anti-Bond.
A dance party is not complete without:
This will be VERY off brand, but Britney Spears. I know. 🤦🏻‍♂️
Tell us, Jess, what makes you feel dapper?
I delight in the details of a well executed outfit, from head to toe. I feel my most dapper when I’m in a fitted, 3-piece suit—but all I really need to elevate my mood and outfit on any given day is a waistcoat and a bow tie.

Thanks, Jess! We love your #BeADamnRipple mentality, and we'll definitely be adopting that dreamy morning routine as well. And you already KNOW we love a lady rocking some menswear. We're excited to keep up with your blogging adventures too.
